Foliage update: Pics from Garrett County Md

Appears the second wave of colors received a boost from the recent cold shot. Maples, that didn’t peak and fall already are turning well. Birches are moving along nice with this recent cold shot.  Oaks are status quo.

Deep Creek Lake itself is surrounded by lots of Oaks. Color is almost always delayed there for the most part and not vivid. Except certain pockets that contain other tree types.

From pics on Social media, it appears Blackwater Canyon shaping up some better color, and Cheat Mt. A decent 2nd wave in spots and a 1st wave for areas that did not change much the first cold shot in early Sept.

There are areas in high ground Wv, large part of Canaan Valley, pockets in Garrett that are well past peak. While areas that are just coming into peak and those predominantly oak areas with lots of green yet.

The light rain this afternoon, set off a more vivid display than the dry look of past days.

Clouds and breezes kicking in pre dawn hours across most of the Alleghenies. Areas east of the Allegheny front remaining calm and some of those valleys across Pocahontas ran 30s yet this a.m.
Today’s temps climbed until midday north, then some showers passed through the northern Alleghenies mid afternoon with temps running low to mid 60s.
Blackwater Station in Davis ran 41° this a.m

System to watch. 18z gfs, 12z euro. While its yet a ways out and the models vary on timing, strength, exact track. Both models are currently showing a much needed soaking for the Alleghenies late weekend to early next week. Models currently on the order of 1-3″ of much needed rainfall after a very dry stretch since Sept 5th. *Not etched in stone*

On a side note, with the euro slower, stronger(sometimes a euro error) it wraps in more cold on the backside and brings the 850 temps to and below freezing. “If” this scenario occured, first high elevation wet flakes could be possible. Not holding my breath on that scenario. But a aspect to watch.

Added the Green Bank Observatory to the list. I know little about the station. Radiation shield, siting , etc. A Cass station ran 32 and 82 today, seeing the similarity gives me some confidence in its accuracy.
Frost this a.m was reserved for the valleys only and freezes only for the coldest spots. Temps jumped greatly across the high ground. At 7 a.m this morning, The Glades were at 27° after a 26° low, while at 7a.m the Garrett Airport reported 54° and Keysers Ridge highway station at 219 ran 58° . A 31° spread.  Similar elsewhere. Green Bank low 30s, Silver Creek at Snowshoe 57° at 7a.m. Blackwater station in Davis at 30° while Cabin Mt ran low 50s.  Typical of the air mass for the time of year. Dominant ridge with a HP north. Dry air, low dewpoints. Long nights allow for some impressive temp falls in the valleys while mixing keeps high ground much milder.
Beautiful day with wall to wall sunshine.
Interesting note and not unusual the valleys have the greatest temp spread, but today Mt tops rose 15-20° today as valleys rose 35-50°!

19° off Accurite in CRS at research spot in Canaan on the valley floor. At 7:30 a.m the valley floor site was at 19° while at 4350′ on Cabin Mt the temp was at 53° …will post the hobo data as I get to it.  No question the temp on the valley floor ran colder this a.m vs yesterday. Up high the breeze continued and temps held up.

Also to note. Bitt 2NW valley, duration of sun is decreased. Shelter doesn’t begin recieving sun until around 9a.m then by mid afternoon the long fall shadows move in. Site location is in a open area, but overall valley recieves less sun. Just a quick obs on that.

temps fell quickly last night. Below freezing before midnight in spots. Very light breezes before dawn mixing out the cold at high spots. East breeze picked up late day across high ground. Some ice formed on water in Canaan on valley floor. The most widespread frost of the season.
