Temp graph put together by Dave Lesher from January 2018Screenshot_20180203-143030

Temps locally in Garrett ranged this afternoon from near freezing at Savage Mt to 40s wv/md line. I always think of this as the “Garrett County Equalizer” . What I mean by that: The western areas of the county, Keysers Ridge, Snaggy Mt, Cranesville area, do much better with upslope snows. Over the course of a winter, this area likely doubles what Savage Mt recieved despite nearly the same elevation, and not much in the way of downslope. There are instances with upslope at times this does not occur, but not often. As the west areas will outsnow this area of Savage Mt, The Savage Mt area will remain colder afterwards when the return SW flow kicks in. Today is a good example and these photos will help illustrate thathires_t2m_wv_7

The 3km nam which does well at modeling this.

Snow at varying intensities for most of the day. Very few idle times. Some heavier streamers. The areas that saw these more persistent recieved higher totals. Localized areas missed out on them, and snow tallies were 3-4″ vs 6- as much as 10″ in areas that consistently had them. The high ratio fluff added up fast. The wind kept totals in exposed areas knocked down with blowing and drifting. Temp maxes were all midnight and most of the day was in the teens expect single digits at the high wv ground, with below 0 windchills. -10 to -20 above 4000′.

Snowfall- Bittinger 2nw Valley, 7.4″ total(4.6″ through 7am, 1.7″ from 7am to 1pm, 1.1″ 1pm to 6pm) 66.5″ on the season

Temps at Bittinger 2nw Valley today and Cabin Mt 4350(Aka Bald Knob) and temp profile nationally late this afternoon.

The morning temps saw a wide variety of temps through the region. Canaan had some 30° swings from the valley floor at 3225′ to Bald Knob at 4350′ shortly after 7a.m.. Also a great diffeence from the Valley Floor to the 3400′ CRN site at the Canaan State Park which failed to drop below 20°. The Canaan Valley Co-op bottomed out at 6°. At a later date I will add the minimum from a experimental site in the northern valley as it is currently being logged.

Snowfall totals were greater as you went from Bittinger, to Mchenry (Wisp reports a bogus 1″ for 48 hour total- Ray Charles measures for them I believe) and maxed out along Snaggy Mt (Cranesville, Alpine Lake, Terra Alta) and down along Cheat Mt in Wv. 2-4″ falls with isolated higher amounts from late Wednesday.  48 hour totals put those areas in the 3-5″ range vs 1-3″ elsewhere. Screenshot_20180125-115417
