Still some foliage left on this side of the mountains Also, this area from the Allegheny Front and east had hill top fog with a low ceiling through the area.

Walker Ridge to Jordan Run and the east side of the Sods

Still overall a lot of foliage left through this area. Its not until you are almost to Bear Rocks before all the trees are defoliated. .

Across the Sods and down…

Foliage is 90%+ gone from the Sods, except for beech which linger all winter and some yellow look as on Aspen. Sone oak lower mainly…The lone red patch which I detailed on October 26th, still has some nice reds, but less than 4 days ago.

Through Canaan..

Foliage story the same here, undergrowth beech holding on and some aspen. Remember no oaks in Canaan(besides a handful literally). 95% bare

Davis to Blackwater Falls State Park

Foliage is pretty well gone here now as well….

Blackwater Falls at 75cfs noon 10/30/19

Back to the Bittinger area

Foliage besides oak and undergrowth beech, pretty well done here as well. Hopefully everyone disregards the maps that shows the area is currently in peak fall foliage. If you are expecting that, plan to look at your feet.

Wheres the cam???

Without pics to add in this section, I’ll fill it in with a cam location detail. The Canaan Cam as I refer to it as, technically a forest service cam listed as the Dolly Sods cam. It covers a view of western Cabin Mt in the distance and that’s the only relation to Dolly Sods for this cam. It offers a great view of Canaan Valley from Bearden Knob just over 3800′

Pics today-

Deep Creek Lake area

Fog had the lake socked in to start the day. That helped create some cool scenes with the fall foliage that remains around the lake. Mainly dominated by oak foliage at this point with some undergrowth beech that holds foliage into the winter. The red oaks currently, and surprisingly have some bright golden foliage in spots. Typically, at least in my opinion, they are usually blah, dull and to brown. This year has turned exceptional for some of them.

Bittinger area to Grantsville

The main foliage left is oak. It’s not nearly as dominant in this area as around the lake, therefore the appearance is now a much more bare look as the rains of yesterday brought down a lot more foliage. Still undergrowth beech, birch is pretty well bare, maples too, some yellowish brown hickory, burgundy white oak and some again, surprisingly golden colored red oaks.

By Clarysville on I68

Still ok foliage, but vs last week, the rain brought a lot down

A picturesque small town, rolling farmland, with Sideling Hill as the backdrop

Around Mcconnellsburg

First topo and google earth image 522 north towards Mcconnellsburg, 3rd and 4th image 522 south of Mcconnellsburg

Up and on and over Tuscarora Mt and around Cowans Gap State Park

A scenic mountain with a big feel. Rising 1600′ above Mcconnellsburg (1300′ gain on Rt 30) on the west side and nearly 1800′ above the Valley east. On top, it “feels” high given the elevation of the surrounding farmland. A rugged steep area. Lots of great views. Color was really good as well.

Also noticeable was the higher Valley on top between the 2 ridges where Little Augwick Creek (Cowan Run) flows. Vegetation of white pine and hemlock were noticeable likely indicating a colder area vs the surrounding locations.

Savage Mt and Savage River area up to Dry Run Rd

Super color in many location within this area. Not as vivid around the Reservoir as elsewhere.

Deep Creek Lake area

Oaks are changing- white oaks to burgundy look, red oaks – a brown yellowish look, mixed with maples, beech, birch, hickory…overall decent color. This area never competes with the vibrant maple dominant areas for best color…IMO. That said, this is as good as this area gets and there is lots of color.

Deer Park to Kitzmiller

Really good color as you go from Deer Park to Kitzmiller. Still lots of bright, vibrant maple, burgundy oaks, some beech. A+ on color through this stretch.

Leaving Kitzmiller to Elk Garden to Jennings Randolph Lake area…

Repeat- nice color through this area. Lowlands and last foliage changing areas doing super.

Mt. Storm to Scherr to Jordan Run Rd area….

Colors past peak in the Mt. Storm area, still some color though, but head down 48 over the east side of the Allegheny Front and color galore…

Jordan Run Rd to the Sods

Nice yellow maple color going up and the oaks just over the east side, a golden brown color. Not vibrant, but full of color.

Bear Rocks at Dolly Sods

Across the top, things are pretty much bare with isolated exceptions. The heath reds are well past peak….EXCEPT this one magnificent small area that held the most vibrant, deepest, dark burgundy reds I’ve ever seen. An area just north of “Turtle Rock”. Even the reds that are 90% bare, contain enough deep red foliage on the 10% left that it still gives an ok overall appearance. But that one spot was a WOW! Definitely the focal point of the pics… Looking east over the Allegheny Front towards North Fork Mt, the foliage is great. Its not extreme on vibrance, but its A+ on everything being pretty well colored in.

And that unbelievable vibrant spot..

You’ll see when those come along…non edited color

Ok, this next shot, on the left, the reds are way past prime, center of the shot=Wow

Back focused on the wow section …did my cam exaggerate the reds? I don’t think so, as it looked fake while I was there. It looked to unreal to be real.

Now go south 30 to 50 yards, the heath are mostly bare.

Headed south on FR 75

Foliage on the trees is mostly gone, views west, mainly bare. Isolated exceptions, few brown oaks, yellow Aspen…and on south the gold tinted rust of the undergrowth beech…..

FR 19 down the east side to the Smoke Hole area..

This entire area covered in color. Not overly vibrant, but overwhelmingly colorful in dark orangish/brown colors with some brighter yellow/orange maples in the mix.

New Creek, Keyser, Rawlings, Cresaptown

Color pretty well held status quo up through this area

By Rocky Gap

Ditto on color…..

The surrounding slopes continue to fill in with color. One of the later spots locally that typically do so. Tree type(oak dominated, mix) and some lake influence.

Foliage is past peak and well past peak in most areas with isolated pockets of decent color. Small pockets of vibrant maple. Lots of areas have the winter look. The oaks are turning, beech(which holds on all winter) hickory, birch almost done…morning valley, high valley frost all through this area.

Dan’s Rock on Dan’s Mountain…..

Foliage was nice in spots on top, spottier lower. Dan’s Rock sits 2300′ higher than the Potomac at Cumberland off to the NE.

Fork Run area, west of McHenry off Shingle Camp Rd.

Lots of color on the Chestnut Oak(yellow) birch retaining some(yellow), scattered maple,(red, orange, yellow) some low sassafras(pinkish-orange)beech(yellowish). Small American Chestnut(yellowish)Overall a colorful area. Red oaks changing but a blah brown or yellowish. Nice hiking trails here, and some very cool rock outcroppings

McHenry back to the Bittinger area….

McHenry and around Deep Creek gaining color. Dominated by oaks it’s a slow go. The east side of Marsh Mt has a fair amount of birch, smaller birch from when that was logged in the 90s It has some maple so tends to be a little more colorful than say the south side and east side of Meadow Mt, that does currently have some color with the oaks changing. Just not vibrant like maples and birches.

Towards Bittinger, more maples, and the foliage season aside patches is wayy past peak and most of the foliage is on the ground. White oaks are turning dark red/burgundy and brown, hickory- yellow, beech- yellowish, red oaks, mehhh, brown, yellowish , with spotty nice maples holding on to their few vibrant leaves

Now compare to the south side of Meadow Mt at Deep Creek

Foliage is strong on Marsh Mt, (not pictured)on the east side. Overall, still a fair amount of green from red oak and spotty color, and splashes of decent color. White oaks are changing now.

Morning fog in spots here, nothing like east.

Bittinger area to Grantsville

Leaves are well last peak, with patches of vibrant maples. Birches. Beech are changing, and oaks are changing. Overall lots of maple that’s dropped, cherry that’s mainly dropped without much color fanfare.

Piney Mt by Clarysville, west of Lavale still nice
