Windy with rainshowers during the morning including a brief heavy rainshower with grape seed size hail. Two showers of snow pellets early afternoon, then very light and light snow showers mid afternoon as temperatures fall to mid 30s. One heavy snow squall came through late afternoon with only a few periods of light snow for the remainder of the day after that.

I also want brag on the weather enthusiasm of this young man. He has the weather bug, lots of knowledge, and eager to learn more. Great to see, and a high recommendation following his work.

The Grantsville wind damage-especially Penn Alps/Spruce Village

Pretty clear this was straight line wind damage from a microburst . Everything falling eastward. 0 sign of tornado damage.

similar events

https://www.weather.gov/dlh/HermantownMicroburst

https://www.weather.gov/bmx/outreach_microbursts

its very within reason to assume the damage at the Spruce village was due to straight line winds 70-100mph

More wind damage occured in Meyersdale, knock ing the press box off the bleachers.

Within reason to believe those winds topped 70 as well, with the nearby padot station going to 69.3.

Interesting note- temps at this site have been running a degree or 2 warmer often vs the Garrett College site when its usually vice versa. This station is located in a area with lots of dead brown grasses on the Valley floor. Higher sun angle heating up the dead brown surface, minimal evapotranspiration, is the likely cause. As the season progresses and the lush grass returns and leaves come out, I suspect things return to max temps running -1 to -3 vs the college. This is a localized surface effect vs the area being warmer.

High elevation snow. Stickage remained mainly above 3100′. Snow/rain mix below 3100′ did occur. Some instability rain and graupel showers as well as pockets of high elevation snow showers did occur yet in spots during the afternoon. Also a few intervals of sun in the afternoon and that helps fuel the popup instability with the cold air aloft.

Bittinger 2nw Valley

A little snow/rain mix predawn. No stickage. A afternoon graupel shower did briefly allow for a trace of graupel on the ground ground. Rapidly melted.

Snow tapered off to very light well before daybreak, then several rain and snow showers during the afternoon, including one very short, heavy snow squall. Snow cover disappered by evening.

Total wnter snowfall of 93.5 inches as of today is more than 60 inches less than normal for this date and is the first time since the winter of 2001-02 that less than 100 inches has been measured as of April 1. See Table 4 below.

Cloudy all day, high 38F. Light snow commenced 515PM and continued without letup up to midnight, often moderate in intensity until mid evening. Dead calm wind the entire time with huge flakes allowed for a tender accumulation on all surfaces. An extremely unusual snowfall event for here.

March’s total snowfall of 6.7 inches was just a quarter of the long term average. See Table 3.1 below. As grim as this seems, this is not a first. In Table 3.1, note the similar very low March snowfall totals in 2009, 2010 and 2012.

To accompany the low total snowfall in March, the mean temperature for the month was 5.9 degrees warmer than the long term average. See Table 12.3 below.
