Dolly Sods Edition
Overall across the top of the Sods, colors are past peak, by a margin. That’s mainly due to the maples and reds of the heath being past prime which aid in the best color. The Aspen have areas of yellows, and sheltered spots of green yet. In areas of yellows and especially wind impacted areas, leaf loss has occured . The beech are about their peak before they drift into their brown winter state and half the foliage hangs on for winter. Birch while spotty, is yellow and or dropping . The oaks, have a fair amount of brown in them but in more oak populated spots, the green shade rules. Oaks in general never give a wow factor in their vibrance. So while color is past its peak across the top, its still pretty decent, and as you dip off the east side, things are much earlier in the process and red creek canyon is in prime time. The incoming cold front as we go into the weekend will further transform the landscape towards the winter look over the top. That will open the views of fall down lower.
