Bittinger 2nw Valley afternoon 10/20/21..site of sheltered pocket that retains snow well to collect winter temps at. Expectations are, mins will be a tick warmer being influenced by tree cover and maxes overall cooler. At times significantly so. More so than what you would expect simply due to tree cover, as it’s a protected low refrigerated pocket with snowcover on. At times during the daytime, surrounding hilltops may run 50s while holding 30s at this location.

Swallow Falls area
birch, maple dominant the river back among deciduous and while good, a fair amount of leaf drop has occured, vibrance faded in some of the birch. Past peak along the river, but still nice.
From there to Cranesville
the Swamp area well past peak. There was nice color in the Swamp the last few weeks that has faded away. The hillsides have stayed subpar with a good amount of leaf drop. Over Snaggy there is some decent color and the undergrowth has some nice color.
Overall across the top of the Sods, colors are past peak, by a margin. That’s mainly due to the maples and reds of the heath being past prime which aid in the best color. The Aspen have areas of yellows, and sheltered spots of green yet. In areas of yellows and especially wind impacted areas, leaf loss has occured . The beech are about their peak before they drift into their brown winter state and half the foliage hangs on for winter. Birch while spotty, is yellow and or dropping . The oaks, have a fair amount of brown in them but in more oak populated spots, the green shade rules. Oaks in general never give a wow factor in their vibrance. So while color is past its peak across the top, its still pretty decent, and as you dip off the east side, things are much earlier in the process and red creek canyon is in prime time. The incoming cold front as we go into the weekend will further transform the landscape towards the winter look over the top. That will open the views of fall down lower.
Cloudy, fog, patchy drizzle early, then partly Cloudy

overall theme, really area wide is- maple areas have peaked, brief, not as vibrant as last year, with exceptions of nice spots. Maples give the best vibrance, with them gone, the birches currently hold great color. Not a widespread dominant species, more in the cooler stream, river bottoms. Beaches have some rusty color, as well as some drop. Aspen, not widespread had good color in Bigtooth, but quaking is lagging and that was the opposite last year as it dropped first. Likely due to being more cold sensitive. Lots of hillsides dominated by oak, and those in large have a green with a bit of brown and a brownish yellow tinge.

Hillsides in large Oak dominated..lots of green. Mix in maple there is some color, also some bare maples, birch areas have good color, not a widespread dominate species. But in areas they are in abundant, and mixed with maples yet holding, there are nice color pockets..Cherry is mostly bare, with some spotty green, yellow/red…

State Park Rd by cherry creek…more birch in the mix peaking
The birches are peaking with their bright golden yellow. The maples, while lots of fell already, there are pockets of good color. Pockets of completely bare areas. The beech are doing what beech does, the golden rusty colors, with some holding green.

Colors across the top are well past prime. Just last week the birch on the north side of Weiss had a ways to go for good color, this week, most are down. There are patches of good maple color. Again, a case of bare and spotty nice areas.. the hillside walking up had a few superb spots. That still doesn’t outweigh the bare and thinned trees.
one of the patchy great color spots. As well as the 2 pics below, same spot
North Weiss knob dropped the birch in a rapid fashion…more in following pics
