ECLIPSE DAY APRIL 8, 2024

Eclipse day, April 8, 2024

The eclipse began in this part of the Alleghenies around 2p.m in the afternoon. Peaking at around 90% at around 3:15p.m and ending shortly near 4:30 pm. While not in the totality zone, it was still a cool experience to observe.

Observing location, next to Cranesville Swamp.

The day that began on the cloudy side with even a few showers, looked pretty bleak for eclipse viewing throughout the morning. Modeling was showing the potential for 90%-100% low cloudiness at the time. However and thankfully mother nature had other plans and skies began to break around a hour and a half before the onset of eclipse time.

At 2pm, passing clouds still existed, but it did not ruin the viewing experience.

And slowly worked it’s way over the next hour and 15 minutes to peak at 90% +/-…

Clouds rolling across. This did at times make any viewing impossible. Short lived cloudy period though

These made possible by the clouds filtering the brightness

The landscaped dimmed, but no where near total darkness like a total eclipse. There was a slight eerie feel. Temps dropped about 5-6° through the peak of the event. Refer back to the prior post for that info. In this link:

Temps ranged mainly from the lower 20s to the upper 20s throughout the snow event. Depths on top 9-10″ over the 3 day event. With settling, underneath melt I’d estimate 12+/- ” fell.

The snow increase with elevation gain was noticeable

Looking up the pipeline, the wind has blown off at the top

Wind had the snow cleaned off the exposed western crest

at the top of the western edge

Colder air incoming this evening, precip transitioning over to snow. Snow activity Thursday. Areas below 3000-3500′ likely meltback during the day tomorrow While up high holds on to light accumulations.

1-2″ Tonight above 3500′, little below that and 1-2″; tomorrow on the tops above 3500′ as elsewhere melts back of whatever falls . So 2-4″ on tops by late tomorrow afternoon while lower elevations again melt back by then.

Then Thursday night in to Friday a.m. looks like a good period of snow. 1-3″ 2000-2500 2-4″ 2500-3000, 3-6″ 3000-3500′ 4-8″ 3500’+

Friday likely some meltback especially below 3000′ , as Friday is a bit colder. Friday night in to Saturday another 1-3″ 2500-3500 , 3500+ 2-5″

Snowfall off the models

AGAIN DO NOT LOOK AT THESE AND EXPECT THAT TO BE WHAT YOU HAVE ON THE GROUND. MELTBACKS OCCUR BELOW 3500′. However, you may tally 1″ melt, 3″ half melt, 2″ melt. And see 6″ of accumulation but never have 2 or 3 on the ground at any time and even bare up some. This is more likely below 3000 to 3500 to occur. Tops should remain in gain mode mostly.
