Dolly Sods Edition October 3, 2024

Foliage across the top

Foliage across the top is PAST PEAK. I see some TV stations and other articles with the east view and say “trees mostly green yet at Dolly Sods”

case in point below

Down the east side where the transition to green occurs is exiting Dolly Sods and also a transition to a more dominant oak woods. Which is always a later turning tree type. As we go through the pics below, we’ll see more pics “of across the top” of Dolly Sods that is past peak.

But first…..

Lets start the day just prior to sunrise:

The epic fog in the valley.. always a beautiful site from above. Not so much if you’re down there in it.
The sun illuminates the reds at the right angle more vivid than than they really are

back towards Bear Rocks

Lots of bare trees
All paths were waterways after the hefty amounts of rain the last 7-10 days.
Now to the foliage on top. 65-70% bare. The top across the Sods is past peak
Most of the color is on the ground
  • Maples- well past peak, some stragglers holding on to some color, even a little green
  • Heaths- just past. Still good color in spots. Some areas lots on the ground. Some greenish/red patches. Not as vibrant as normal
  • Birch- just past their prime
  • Beech- typical late change to rust
  • Oak- mainly green with some smaller ones brownish red
