Snow- Round 1 Of Many To Come

Snow- Round 1 Of Many To Come

December 31, 2024 7:16am

Showers incoming today, transitioning to snow activity from the highest elevations in the southern Alleghenies first and transitioning from there northward through the night.

Snowshowers and squalls tonight through Wednesday night.

The NWS currently has Winter Storm Warnings out for the Alleghenies.

If I was betting in Vegas I’d lean towards the under on snowfall expectations for most on this round 1.

▪︎ NWS SNOWFALL MAP

  • NWS Expected
  • NWS Low end. Personally I’d lean this way with higher pops in squalls Wednesday PM
  • NWS High End

▪︎ Model output with round 1(Tonight-Thursday am)

  • 6Z Euro
  • 6z GFS

Areas such as Eastern Garrett, 1-3″ with higher pops should squalls occur, Central Garrett. Bittinger area 2-5″, higher pops should squalls occur. Cranesville 3-6″ , Canaan 4-7″ with higher pops with squalls , Snowshoe 4-7″ higher pops with squalls. Those are ore localized. Leaning towards the low to mid range in those thoughts.

Initially at the transition time, the snow is wet, but that should move towards a powdery type snow early Wednesday and be blown about under strong W-WSW winds.

The DGZ looks pretty dried out early tomorrow. So many times when that look occurs, you get fine, low snow ratio periods of granular snow. Then, the squall look in the afternoon and towards evening and in to the early overnight looks to hold some potential for those passing squalls that rapidly cause poor travel conditions. Lets see how that aspect evolves tomorrow and something to keep an eye on

Round 2 Friday in to Saturday I like a bit better than incoming tonight Round 1 for accumulation.

Round 3 Sun-Monday time currently holds the greatest potential.
