Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge Edition October 17, 2025

  • Comparison to Northern Cabin(Cabin Mt-Western Sods)
The day began with clear and calm conditions, after a lengthy night of below freezing temperatures. Temperatures fell below freezing last night at 8pm and continued in to the 20s and eventually the teens. Bottoming out at 16.6°. Even the beaver ponds had a skim coat of ice around the edges, ice needle formation, and just enough fog across the valley to make the landscape nice and frosty white at daybreak.

The trek to the valley began shortly before 7 as daybreak just began brightening the landscape
Arriving at the valley floor, not only was the temp drop felt, but as you broke out of the woods to the open valley, conditions were a bit lighter, and noticeably white.
Middle Valley Trail getting a much needed bridge across Glade Run that is frequently dammed up downstream by beavers. That creates knee to waist deep waters traversing the trail.
The stillness and frost a half hour before sunrise.
The golden Aspen, while not plentiful offered enough contrast to the frosty white for some good scenery
The beaver pond getting a thin layer of ice on top
Nollie loving the cold weather
Ice Needles
The frost was beautiful
The fog came and went a few times prior to sunrise
The Lone Red Spruce
As daylight brightened the skies, the landscape grew whiter
If the clock had a pause button. 15 minutes prior to sunrise i would have pressed it.
The view up to Cabin Mt. Where temps were above freezing
The sun begins the illumination
Bright whites of the trees stood out
This is where I’d rated this a 10/10 moment
