Colors peaking across the top. The reds of the heath passing the peak mark and dropping. Maples peaking. There is some that will deepen that still show some green yet. At the same time leaf drop appears around 15%+/- with the maples and rain and wind will rapidly begin to remove leaves those as they reach peak color. Birch, Aspen are nearing the peak stage. Not overly vibrant by any stretch. Still some greens scattered. Also some leaf drop on the ones that have changed. Beech are fringed changed and in the process. Overall, across the top colors are about as good as it gets considering drop is occuring and with weather will continue to occur and rapidly so in maples. While some will yet deepen color, there will also be color loss from here out.

September Casual Obs
– Leaves lagging by estimated 4-7 days on what would be typical
– Lots of acorns dropping. The most acorns seen in many years
– Apples are in abundance
– The wooly bears caterpillars I’ve seen have not had much black on them
– Hurricane Ida to start the month passed as a TD really erased the summer dryness area wide and after a dry period following additional appreciable rainfall put things back in the wet category. Stream flow typical.
– High Elevation frost pockets in the Alleghenies with the first recorded frost in the east on the 3rd, and the most days freezing and below in the east. Edging out Mt. Washington that did go into winter mode the last several days of the month.
