the state is set to map this out and provide more details in the coming days.

For now, just doing a very rough estimate perhaps 250-350 acres impacted by the native canker worm

Social media chatter of it was frost on top that caused this are 100% incorrect. For one it’s a known that it’s causes by a pest. But these ridge tops without an unseasonably cold air mass that produces freezing temperatures per the air mass in place in which we have not had. Are some of the locations in the area that recieve the earliest last frost of the year and often prior to leaf out as the colder high valleys get much harder late frost than the ridge tops. A very frequent often not understood but yet common occurrence as most think “higher elevation- colder” which this time of year is rarely the case with freezing temps. Hopefully and possibly soon a weather station will be atop Meadow Mt(fingers crossed) and one at The Glades.

Lets do a comparison view of colder starts to May vs the warmer start to May of this year from this spot. 5/20/20, 5/20/21, 5/20/24. Those years, leaf out ran a bit behind schedule. This year I’d say 7-11 days ahead of schedule. Estimation

This section is going to focus a lot towards the defoliated section on Meadow Mt. Right now it’s said to be some type of native canker worm defoliating the trees. Forestry will have more details and in depth report upcoming soon. Reading on them(canker worms), it looks like once they mature further (in a few weeks) they’ll fall to the ground, and their destruction will be done and hopefully the trees will green back up for the season. You’ll see in more images ahead the impact of what is yet bare trees.
