A quick flashback to last Monday morning at the same spot. The initial assumption by today is picture. Not much color. The leaves haven’t changed yet. In reality, bare trees and yet green oaks make it appear very colorless and the best maple color is now on the ground.

Aside the birch on top, foliage is well past peak. From Gandy, Spruce Knob lake and up. This terrible assumption year after year that is repeatedly posted about foliage starts changing on top and works it’s way down is ridiculous. This past week. Tourism promo stated ” At 4800′ Spruce Knob late September and by mid October Spruce Knob Lake. That’s done without knowing tree type and without any understanding of how much colder nights are down at the 3700′ valley vs the 4800′ top. Foliage all along Gandy is past peak. As you’ll see in more pics further below.

More leaves towards the top? Yes as you transition to this dominant birch zone. As around Spruce Knob lake is dominant maple

Any tourism site pushing peak colors mid October, should experience reality. (And rarely ever will you have peak colors west of Spruce Knob as late as mid October

Bald Knob Edition September 25, 2024

On top of Baldy. The maples have just crested peak. Colors about as good as they get with areas of leaf loss in progress. A few good rains with rapidly drop more of those to the ground. The birch seemed a bit duller than last week. Especially looking over to Weiss through the fog. I couldn’t tell if those had lost some or browned a bit.

The wild cherry had significant leaf drop walking up. Typical of them. Maples on the hillside were a mix of good color and some green. Locust were green/brown. Neither are dominant species.
