The day began with the valley bottoming out at 19.9°. The coldest temperature in the lower 48.

That’s at the Virginia Tech Weather Station in the northern part of the valley. The photos upcoming below are in that area as well.

On my way towards the station, I brought along a hobo logger and set out while I adventured around a bit and picked it back up on the way out. It too hit 19.9.

Comparison to the Ridgetops

As you walk down Middle Ridge trail you can progressively feel it getting colder.
