Savage Mt and Savage River area up to Dry Run Rd

Super color in many location within this area. Not as vivid around the Reservoir as elsewhere.

Deep Creek Lake area

Oaks are changing- white oaks to burgundy look, red oaks – a brown yellowish look, mixed with maples, beech, birch, hickory…overall decent color. This area never competes with the vibrant maple dominant areas for best color…IMO. That said, this is as good as this area gets and there is lots of color.

Deer Park to Kitzmiller

Really good color as you go from Deer Park to Kitzmiller. Still lots of bright, vibrant maple, burgundy oaks, some beech. A+ on color through this stretch.

Leaving Kitzmiller to Elk Garden to Jennings Randolph Lake area…

Repeat- nice color through this area. Lowlands and last foliage changing areas doing super.

Mt. Storm to Scherr to Jordan Run Rd area….

Colors past peak in the Mt. Storm area, still some color though, but head down 48 over the east side of the Allegheny Front and color galore…

Jordan Run Rd to the Sods

Nice yellow maple color going up and the oaks just over the east side, a golden brown color. Not vibrant, but full of color.

Bear Rocks at Dolly Sods

Across the top, things are pretty much bare with isolated exceptions. The heath reds are well past peak….EXCEPT this one magnificent small area that held the most vibrant, deepest, dark burgundy reds I’ve ever seen. An area just north of “Turtle Rock”. Even the reds that are 90% bare, contain enough deep red foliage on the 10% left that it still gives an ok overall appearance. But that one spot was a WOW! Definitely the focal point of the pics… Looking east over the Allegheny Front towards North Fork Mt, the foliage is great. Its not extreme on vibrance, but its A+ on everything being pretty well colored in.

And that unbelievable vibrant spot..

You’ll see when those come along…non edited color

Ok, this next shot, on the left, the reds are way past prime, center of the shot=Wow

Back focused on the wow section …did my cam exaggerate the reds? I don’t think so, as it looked fake while I was there. It looked to unreal to be real.

Now go south 30 to 50 yards, the heath are mostly bare.

Headed south on FR 75

Foliage on the trees is mostly gone, views west, mainly bare. Isolated exceptions, few brown oaks, yellow Aspen…and on south the gold tinted rust of the undergrowth beech…..

FR 19 down the east side to the Smoke Hole area..

This entire area covered in color. Not overly vibrant, but overwhelmingly colorful in dark orangish/brown colors with some brighter yellow/orange maples in the mix.

New Creek, Keyser, Rawlings, Cresaptown

Color pretty well held status quo up through this area

By Rocky Gap

Ditto on color…..

The surrounding slopes continue to fill in with color. One of the later spots locally that typically do so. Tree type(oak dominated, mix) and some lake influence.

On north to the Bittinger area

Foliage is past peak and well past peak in most areas with isolated pockets of decent color. Small pockets of vibrant maple. Lots of areas have the winter look. The oaks are turning, beech(which holds on all winter) hickory, birch almost done…morning valley, high valley frost all through this area.

Dan’s Rock on Dan’s Mountain…..

Foliage was nice in spots on top, spottier lower. Dan’s Rock sits 2300′ higher than the Potomac at Cumberland off to the NE.

Fork Run area, west of McHenry off Shingle Camp Rd.

Lots of color on the Chestnut Oak(yellow) birch retaining some(yellow), scattered maple,(red, orange, yellow) some low sassafras(pinkish-orange)beech(yellowish). Small American Chestnut(yellowish)Overall a colorful area. Red oaks changing but a blah brown or yellowish. Nice hiking trails here, and some very cool rock outcroppings

McHenry back to the Bittinger area….

McHenry and around Deep Creek gaining color. Dominated by oaks it’s a slow go. The east side of Marsh Mt has a fair amount of birch, smaller birch from when that was logged in the 90s It has some maple so tends to be a little more colorful than say the south side and east side of Meadow Mt, that does currently have some color with the oaks changing. Just not vibrant like maples and birches.

Towards Bittinger, more maples, and the foliage season aside patches is wayy past peak and most of the foliage is on the ground. White oaks are turning dark red/burgundy and brown, hickory- yellow, beech- yellowish, red oaks, mehhh, brown, yellowish , with spotty nice maples holding on to their few vibrant leaves

Now compare to the south side of Meadow Mt at Deep Creek

Deep Creek Lake

Foliage is strong on Marsh Mt, (not pictured)on the east side. Overall, still a fair amount of green from red oak and spotty color, and splashes of decent color. White oaks are changing now.

Morning fog in spots here, nothing like east.

Bittinger area to Grantsville

Leaves are well last peak, with patches of vibrant maples. Birches. Beech are changing, and oaks are changing. Overall lots of maple that’s dropped, cherry that’s mainly dropped without much color fanfare.

Blackwater Falls State Park

We will begin at Pendleton Point. A superb overlook view across to Shays Run and the crazy golden yellow birches, as well as up and down river of the Blackwater Canyon.

And the colors were….Wow…and stand out even more with the rain saturating the colors and the cloudy skies

That tree there, in the next grouping of pics from across the Canyon, it stands out..

A jump across the Canyon looking back towards Pendleton Point, Pendleton Run and up and down river of the Blackwater.

The colors from this side seemed even more vivid/vibrant/spectacular/awesome than from the Pendleton side. The birches are crazy good, red maples are super. The tulip poplar that I seen close by, those yellows on those were not that great. The vibrant birches though stood out.

Oh yeah, the tree from the other side

On back to Lindy……the colors on down the Canyon were less vibrant than the upper part. Still good, but few more greens and not overwhelming in color like up river.

Scenes from around the park

Canaan Mountain

Coming up Canaan Mt from Davis, still some nice color. Lots have fell but not bad. On top, a lot of the understory beech are peaking out with spotty maples retaining nice color. On back Canaan Mt, well and wayyy past peak and a snowless winter look almost.

Thomas on north 219 to the top of Backbone

This area is well beyond peak with lots of leaves on the ground. A fairly heavy weighted maple area The understory beech though gave decent color in spots.

North to Garrett County.. near Sand Flat Rd

Color is patchy. A fairly heavily mixed red oak area. Some of the white oak is fading to reddish and or brown colors

Deep Creek Lake on north

The immediate Lake area is still a slow go, a little more color coming in. But being heavily oak dominated, and red oak, it’s a slow transition. Always is On north from Cherry Creek where the birches and some red maple are colorful, the colors are running out with spotty exceptions near Bittinger with lots on the ground now

Back up the fog zone on Savage Mt…

Some nice colors in this area….couldn’t tell it today.

Canaan Mt.

Sticking here was minimal, as I left at 6:30a.m there were traces on some roofs and around a few trees.

Dave Leshers report at Davis 3SE, Canaan Heights

Bald Knob at Canaan

Up the Bald Knob trail, traces of snow began 3800-3900, then around and above 4000′ or so, white was more dominant. Rime ice coated the tops. It appeared some time rime formed, then temps ran 32.2 at the Bald Station awhile overnight, I think that partially melted the rime that had formed, then it refroze. That’s what looks like happened. Snowfall appeared around 1/2″ to 3/4″ on top. Foliage, while there is nice but scattered foliage down lower, and vibrant , up top pretty well resembled winter with only a few trees with any foliage .. All in the area even with the yet nice color is Past Peak. Lots of bare trees…lots

Headed towards the knob, Spruce Knob that is…..first

Dropping down from Canaan, to Harman (nice color with the tops on fog and rimed white, hard to tell on pics)across 33 at the Allegheny Front and by Seneca Rocks. Once on the east side, color is spotty with lots of green…

Headed on up, headed on up 🎵🎵 ….. 🌨🌨 to Spruce

Up the route to Spruce, the road was littered with debri, mainly small twigs, leaves from yet green oak trees, until about the halfway point or so, then maples begin transitioning in and taking over and some lower had nice color yet, but the top 1/3 was mainly bare before the transition to spruce with some vibrant exceptions… Snow, it began around 4000′ +/- here as well. Roughly 1-1.25″ of snow on top. Mainly on the top east side as the winds were extreme on the west side. ..

Back to Canaan

Top of the southern side of Weiss Knob with rime and light snow coat, as well as Cabin seen from Freeland Rd. The lower section of Cabin Mt to the north of Whitegrass had super color, peak on that side.

Deep Creek Lake to Bittinger area

Deep Creek Lake area, still blotches of nice color, overall with the oaks, it’s a green theme. Nice colors along lower end of Cherry Creek. Back towards Bittinger, few remaining nice patches of maple, lots of bare trees, some green oaks, and some yellows remain on the birches. All about the tree type.

First snow of the season video
